FIVE MINUTES LATER, he was out the door with a travel mug. As soon as he was on the interstate, he called Tim’s phone again. He was preparing another rant for his voicemail when, to his surprise, Tim picked up.

“I know. You can scream at me later.”

“What the fuck are you doing, Tim?”

“I said later, man. Look, I just wanted to find Jordan for Kathleen. I didn’t want to fuck up your weekend.”

“Bullshit. You wanted to find him yourself because you’re still somehow giving him the benefit of the doubt, and you knew I wouldn’t. Where are you?”

“Virginia Beach. I had a feeling.”

“Yeah, me too. Have you found him?”

“No one was at Kevin Lassiter’s place. Which, by the way, he owns outright, and which is a really nice place for a bartender who maybe, probably sells a little weed on the side. I don’t know what else to do, so I’m staking out the house. And I asked Lassiter’s manager at the bar to let me know if he shows up or calls.”

“Shit. You need to get back here. Now.”

“You want me to just give up on finding him? I can’t do that. I promised Kathleen.”

“You’re not going to find him by hanging around there waiting. Did you try calling around to local hotels to see if he checked in anywhere?”

Tim scoffed. “I am a detective, in case you forgot.”

“Well, right now you’re not acting like one. You’re not thinking straight. Come back, and we’ll find him together.”

“It’s too late to make the drive now. If he’s not back by morning, I’ll head back.”

“Goddamn it, Tim.”

“Look, I’m not asking you to do anything. This is my thing, and I don’t want it to blow back on you. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Fuck you. I’m on my way. Call me if he shows, but do not go in there alone. You don’t know what the situation is. I mean it, Tim. I’ll fucking kill you.”

“Thanks, I love you too.”

“And you’re paying me back for my gas, asshole.” Paul ended the call and tossed the phone onto the passenger seat.

Tim didn’t call, and Paul drove eighty most of the way down, heading into Virginia Beach by just past eight-thirty. He drove slowly down the well-lit street listed on Kevin Lassiter’s license, looking for Tim’s car. The neighborhood wasn’t particularly interesting; it was all condos, and they all looked the same, but they were large and well cared for. Paul had no idea what real estate prices were in the area, but he would bet Tim’s guess was right, and it should have been out of Lassiter’s price range. That didn’t necessarily mean anything nefarious, of course. He could have inherited money or just be great at saving.

Paul spotted Tim’s Civic on a cross street, half a block from Lassiter’s address, with a good view of the house. He parked, walked over to it, and banged hard on the driver’s side window. Tim gave a satisfying jump before rolling down the window.

“Hey,” he said. “You got here fast.
